Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, February 13) – The use of plastic bags will be banned again in Quezon City from March 1, the city government said on Saturday.
Mayor Joy Belmonte said the city will resume full implementation of Municipal Ordinance 2868-2019, which prohibits the use and distribution of plastic bags, a move deemed crucial to support the global call to reduce plastic waste.
The memorandum covers all shopping centers, supermarkets, fast food chains, pharmacies and other retailers registered under the Department of Business Licensing and Permits.
“We will not allow retailers to use more plastic bags at checkout counters,” he said in the statement.
Belmonte said consumers should bring their own reusable bags.
The use of brown paper bags in supermarkets and retail stores will also be banned from 2022.
The ordinance also mandates that restaurants and hotels operating in Quezon City will also have to abandon single-use plastics and disposable materials such as plastic utensils; paper / plastic cups, plates, straws and other single-use plastic and disposable materials, including Styrofoam, for customers dining at your establishments.
Likewise, hotels are prohibited from distributing soap, shampoo and “other articles used for hygienic purposes in single-use bags and containers.”
For food delivery and take-out orders, establishments, including Grab Food and Food Panda, are urged to include a “per order protocol”, in which customers will be asked if they need single-use plastic utensils and sachets of condiments.
“We would also like to remind the public that eco-friendly bags or reusable bags must be properly sanitized before and after use in supermarkets and markets. We are also encouraging the public to use their own eating utensils in their homes and offices while consuming their takeout, “said Andrea Villaroman, director of the Department of Environmental Protection and Waste Management.
