PSC, GAB work together for PH sports

In an effort to define professional players from amateur athletes, officials from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Games and Amusement Board (GAB) issued the guidelines that will give a clearer picture on the matter through of a Joint Resolution No. 2020-01.

“This joint resolution meets a long-felt need in the sports community,” Mitra said. “If an athlete is paid and doesn’t play for the flag, then he or she is a professional athlete.”

“With this development, it is expected that in the future there will be no confusion of any kind between sport stakeholders and implementers.”

The resolution between the PSC and the GAB, with the Department of Health comprising the Joint Administrative Order No. 2020-0001, would guide those interested in sport.

This would also benefit sports regulators in the implementation of their functions and would guarantee the proper functioning of the two agencies, since certain terms were redefined for professional and non-professional sports.

By law, the two agencies report to the Office of the President.

The GAB, pursuant to Presidential Decree No. 871 and Executive Order No. 120, is mandated to regulate and oversee all professional sports and games, while the PSC is created to serve as the sole policy-making body. and coordinate all amateur sports development programs. and institutions under the Law of the Republic No. 6847.

The joint resolution GAB-PSC establishes that sports or professional competitions will refer to individual or team sports, games, competitions, tournaments, competitions and combats, through which participating athletes receive sums of money or other forms of compensation such as salary or awards.

“We must remember that the JAO only allows the resumption of professional sports competitions in areas classified as low risk during this time of pandemic,” Mitra said.

“According to the JAO, real games for amateur sports will be suspended until effective vaccines or drugs are developed,” Mitra added.
