LOCAL Professional Basketball League Commissioner Willie Marcial received this year’s Executive of the Year award from the Philippine Sports Writers Association (PSA).

Mr. Marcial, on the 10th Commissioner of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), he is being honored by the PSA for successfully leading the league by hosting a tournament “bubble” last year amid the pandemic.

The award is one of 32 awards to be presented at the virtual PSA Awards Night taking place on March 27th.

Forced to recalibrate his season last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, Marcial led the league’s effort to save his 45th season by holding a tournament bubble at Clark City in Angeles, Pampanga.

From October to December, the PBA worked its way through the many challenges of holding its first bubble tournament en route to completing the belated Philippine Cup, with the Barangay Geneva San Miguel Kings crowned champions.

The successful PBA bubble proved to be a viable “model” for other leagues to follow in conducting their own confined tournaments.

Mr. Marcial is the second PBA commissioner to be named Executive of the Year by the PSA after Chito Salud in 2012.

Previous award winners are William Ramirez, Ramon S. Ang, Manny V. Pangilinan, Wilfred Uytengsu, Hans Sy, Ricky Vargas, Dan Palami, Jude Echauz, and Philip Ella Juico.

The PSA Awards Night will be held virtually at the TV5 Media Center. It will air on March 28 through One Sports + from 7 pm to 8:30 pm – Michael Angelo S. Murillo
