“Private schools should defer physical classes”

MANILA, Philippines – Private schools can reopen for classes before public ones, but they should not have face-to-face classes until August 24, according to presidential spokesman Harry Roque.

Roque also said that the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases adopted the Department of Education’s basic education learning continuity plan to start the 2020-2021 school year on August 24 and end on April 30.

Private schools can start classes from June “, but there should not be face-to-face [classes] until August 24 … All classroom instructions in the basic education classroom begin on August 24, “he said in the televised briefing for Laging Handa.

He added that private schools that want to teach before August 24 could do so online or organize homeschooling.

When classes start on August 24, they could be held in classrooms, or through distance learning or home schooling, Roque said.

No school sports

Extracurricular activities have also been canceled. These include school sports, journalism on campus and the like, he said.

Regular school activities are being modified in response to the health crisis caused by the new coronavirus.

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian said authorities should study the home learning model practiced in other countries to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Gatchalian, who chairs the basic education committee, said this would mean that the curriculum would have to be curtailed and that more important subjects could be taught through media such as television or radio.

Online learning would also be good, but he said statistics indicated that only 40 percent of students have access to the Internet and computers.

That is why there is a need to improve student access to technology and the Internet in the near future, he added.

He also urged private schools to continue learning online, as many of them have the capacity to do so.

They must postpone face-to-face classes until they are sure that the local government has the capacity to keep COVID-19 at bay, he added.
