GREECE – An eight-month pregnant Afghan asylum seeker was released from the hospital on Tuesday after setting herself on fire over the weekend at a camp on the Greek island of Lesbos, the Migration Ministry said.
The 26-year-old woman placed her two children outside her store Sunday before setting it on fire in an attempt to burn herself alive, police said.
Other camp residents, police and firefighters helped put out the blaze, the statement added.
When she was examined in hospital, it was learned that she suffered from psychological problems after her request to be relocated to Germany was rejected, although a ministerial source said this had been “a misunderstanding”.
Authorities had asked her to stay in Greece until her son was born, but she had not understood, the ministry source said.
The woman must appear before the prosecutor’s office in Mytilene, Lesbos’ main city, accused of setting her shop on fire, police said.
The temporary camp on the island, which houses 6,000 asylum seekers, was hastily set up after fires destroyed the notorious Moria camp, the most overcrowded in Europe.
Camp residents and migrant rights activists have denounced what they say are deteriorating conditions at the replacement camp in winter conditions.
On Tuesday, a child was found dead after a fire in a refugee camp north of Athens, the latest in a series of such incidents in camps around Greece.
