VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis said he was very saddened that some people during the holiday closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic managed to slip away during the holidays while so many people are suffering financial problems or are ill.

During Sunday noon prayer comments at the Vatican, Francis said “we don’t know what 2021 has in store for us.”

But, he added, “what we can do each and everyone together is to commit ourselves a little more to caring for others” and for the environment, “our common home”.

He recognized that there is a temptation to look after one’s own interests and to “live hedonistically, trying only to satisfy one’s own pleasure.

Throughout the pandemic, the pontiff has emphasized caring for those most in need and obeying measures against contagion.

Instead of appearing in a window overlooking St. Peter’s Square, as he usually does on Sundays, Francis delivered his comments, broadcast on television and social media, from inside a Vatican palace, in accordance with the pandemic strategy to deter the crowds.
