Pope Francis, Archbishop Justin Welby, and Moderator Martin Fair’s Message

A Christmas letter from Pope Francis, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, and Moderator of the (Presbyterian) Church of Scotland, Martin Fair, to the political leaders of South Sudan.

Excellencies,

In this Christmas season, we remember that our Lord Jesus Christ came into the world among the smallest: in a dusty barn with animals. Later, he called those who want to be great in his kingdom to be servants of all (Mark 10:43).

We remain prayerfully aware of the commitments made at the Vatican in April 2019: yours to lead your country to a smooth implementation of the Peace Agreement, and ours to visit South Sudan in due course, as the things go back to normal. We are glad to see the little progress you have made, but know that it is not enough for your people to feel the full effect of peace. When we visit, we yearn to witness a changed nation, ruled by leaders who, in the words of the Holy Father last year, “’holding hands, united. . . as simple citizens ‘to’ become Fathers (and Mothers) of the Nation ”.

We pray, this Christmas, that you will know a greater trust among yourselves and a greater generosity of service to your people. We pray that they will know the peace that passes understanding in their own hearts and in the heart of their great nation (Philippians 4: 7).

Francis
