LEGAZPI CITY, Albay, Philippines – Police are tracking a man who confronted government forces in a shooting on Saturday in a remote village in the city of Mandaon in Masbate province.

Maj. Maria Luisa Calubaquib, a spokeswoman for the Bicol Regional Police Office, said the police and Army soldiers were on an intelligence gathering mission in Barangay Cabitan. At around 10:45 a.m., the gunman, identified as Manuel Rubio, fired on the operating team, causing a five-minute shooting.

The suspect was able to evade arrest, but his wife Genevie was arrested.

A search of the couple’s house yielded a hand grenade and two cell phones.

Police investigators have yet to determine whether the suspects are members of the New People’s Army (NPA) or a criminal union operating in the province.
