The policeman who shot and killed a woman and her son in Paniqui, Tarlac province, on Sunday says he regrets what he has done and asks his superiors for help.
In a video posted Thursday on the Central Luzon police Facebook page, Police Brig. General Valeriano de León, the regional police chief, is seen reprimanding police sergeant major Jonel Nuezca for the violent reaction of the Philippine National Police (PNP) to his shooting death, Sonya Gregorio, 52 years old, and his son, Frank Anthony Gregorio. , 25, during a standoff over the right of way in his neighborhood in Barangay Cabayaoasan in Paniqui on Sunday afternoon.
“You dragged the [entire] PNP for the mud. In your many years of service, I am sure you have experienced our ups and downs. Didn’t they teach you how to deal with it? “De Leon told Nuezca, referring to dealing with the officers’ anger.” You could have taken your breath and let go. Instead, you killed those people like dogs. “
‘I regret it so much’
“I admit my mistake. I got carried away by my strong emotions, “replied Nuezca. “I’m so sorry”.
De León told Nuezca, who has been charged with two counts of murder, that he will likely be removed from the service.
“Please sir, I beg you to help me, for my family,” said Nuezca.
“Pray heartily. We provide protection to your family because everyone is angry with you and you don’t have any more friends. Pray for them, because we can’t control everyone,” De León said.
The video was previously taken on the instructions of Police General Debold Sinas, the head of the PNP, during a visit to the Gregorio wake at the family home in Cabayaoasan.
Sinas told De Leon to speak with Nuezca, 43, and record the officer’s confession for the prosecution to use as evidence.
In a televised briefing on Thursday, Sinas said the two children who had taken videos of the killings had agreed to testify for the prosecution.
He said the two minors, a 12-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy, had submitted affidavits and would receive protection from the government.
Their guardians have also agreed to allow them to testify, Sinas said.
“We have given them security and they will be registered in the [Witness Protection Program]”He added.
No delays in case
Sinas said that he had spoken with the Gregorio family and apologized for Nuezca’s actions. He said he promised the family that there would be no delays in the case.
The PNP chief said he had spoken with local officials in Paniqui and requested professional help for the two minors and several other children who had witnessed the killings.
He said that even Nuezca’s daughter, who was at the scene when the killings occurred, would also receive professional care. De León, he said, has seen the girl and learned from the family that she has been suffering from insomnia since Sunday.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Noriel Rambaoa, Tarlac provincial police chief, said Thursday that nine children had witnessed the killings and had started receiving counseling from social workers.
Rambaoa said the children could be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
“Some of them have nightmares and any loud noise scares them,” he said, noting that the children are suffering the psychological effects of the shooting.
“They have also started to lose their appetite,” Rambaoa said, citing the children’s families.
He said that Nuezca’s daughter began receiving counseling on Tuesday.
Police have been deployed to secure the children, he said.
“The children are heavily guarded, although there are no threats to their lives,” Rambaoa said. INQ
