MANILA, Philippines – The Regional Police Office 5 (Bicol region) through the Sorsogon Provincial Police Office has created a special investigation team (SIT) to investigate the shooting incident of an online journalist in the city of Sorsogon.
The investigating team of Jobert Bercasio’s death will be headed by Lieutenant Colonel Joceric Dela Peña, PRO5 provincial deputy director of Operations, as SIT commander, according to a statement from the police of the Bicol region on Tuesday.
Bercasio was riding his motorcycle in Barangay Cabid-an when two armed men riding a motorcycle shot him four times at 7:55 pm Monday.
He ran a morning news and commentary show on Balangibog Internet TV broadcast via Facebook, and was also a former reporter for a radio station in the city of Legazpi.
The Regional Unit for the Fight against Cybercrime was also instructed to examine their social media accounts as part of the investigation.
“PNP Bicol condemns in the strongest way the brutal murder of the aforementioned journalist. Thus, it will mobilize all possible means within the limits of the law to investigate and identify the culprit of the events and bring justice to the grieving family, ”said PRO5.
