MANILA, Philippines – Police officers across the country have been ordered to monitor bars and other drinking spots within their areas that could become “ground zero” for massive COVID-19 infections.
Police Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, commander of the Covid Shield Joint Task Force, issued the order Sunday after two establishments in Quezon City and Makati were caught operating illegally despite a permanent ban in areas still under community quarantine.
Eleazar said that according to health protocol guidelines, bars and other establishments whose main business was serving alcohol were still prohibited from reopening even under the modified general community quarantine.
“So any attempt to accept clients is already a clear violation of IATF guidelines and possibly even local ordinances,” he added.
“There have already been cases in the past of drinking sessions that led to a massive infection. As responsible entrepreneurs, they must follow the existing rules so that they do not add to the problems of coronavirus infection, “he said.
