Poe to DepEd: Touch LGU, private groups for delivery of food packages to students

MANILA, Philippines – Senator Grace Poe on Saturday advised the Department of Education (DepEd) to seek help from local government units (LGUs) as well as private groups to help distribute food packages for students.

Poe said that LGUs can ask community members, especially those who recently lost their jobs due to the pandemic, for help in distributing food packages.

“By providing food for our students, we also provide livelihood opportunities for our people affected by the pandemic,” the senator said in a statement.

DepEd previously said that its School Feeding Program (SBFP) was changed from providing hot meals in schools to delivering nutritious meals to children’s homes.

The modifications were made due to the distance learning that is now being implemented amid the coronavirus disease.

The Department of Education may also seek help from Gawad Kalinga and Ateneo de Manila University through its Blueplate Learning program to assist in distribution, Poe said.

Poe also noted that “private groups can help fill the gaps in certain areas that are difficult to reach by the DepEd or the barangay.”

DepEd previously revealed that students entering kindergarten and students in grades 1 through 6 are “wasted” or “severely wasted” based on the 2019-2020 SBFP records.
