PNP Units to Investigate Deleted Fake Facebook Accounts Linked to Police Officers

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine National Police (PNP) will investigate fake Facebook accounts that were removed and traced back to police officers, PNP spokesman Ysmael Yu said Wednesday.

In a statement, Yu said that the PNP’s Cybercrime Fighting Group and Information Technology Management Service are “requesting the list of alleged Facebook accounts linked to the PNP.”

“In case there are updates, it will be from the end until the feedback from the PNP Chief (Gen. Camilo Cascolan),” Yu said.

When a reaction was sought on the removal of Facebook accounts, Yu said that the police organization respects Facebook’s decision.

“PNP has no problem with this issue. FB (Facebook) owns its website, it is the only troubleshooter on suspicious accounts detected and marked as fake, ”he said.

Last week, the social media giant announced the removal of some 100 fake accounts linked to the military and police that shared posts critical of the opposition, activism and communism. The administration’s “advocacy” groups were also removed from the social networking site.

Facebook said the posts were removed not because of their content, but because they allegedly misled Facebook users into thinking those accounts were from real people.

The move also caught the attention of President Rodrigo Duterte in which he tried to talk to Facebook about removing the accounts.
