MANILA, Philippines – The mayor of Los Baños, Laguna, who was killed inside the municipal hall on December 3, suffered three gunshot wounds with a 5.56-caliber firearm, according to the National Police Crime Laboratory of the Philippines (PNP).
Brig. General Steve Ludan, director of the PNP Crime Laboratory, said Monday that the medico-legal officer recovered three metal jacket fragments during an autopsy on the body of Mayor Cesar Pérez.
“The ballistic examination performed on the metal fragments collected at the crime scene revealed that [these] they are bullet casings fired with a 5.56 caliber firearm, ”he said at a press conference.
Ballistic examination of metal fragments recovered from the victim’s body also revealed that they were fired with a 5.56-caliber firearm, according to Ludan.
He said the autopsy report revealed that Pérez died of gunshot wounds to the head, trunk and right shoulder. An initial report by Laguna police previously indicated that Pérez was shot twice in the head.
Ludan added that the evidence recovered by the medico-legal officer has been encrypted in the PNP’s Firearms Identification System database, but so far no match has been found as of December 10.
Pérez, also a former deputy governor of Laguna, was previously included on the national government’s watch list of government officials allegedly involved in drug trafficking. He had repeatedly denied this accusation.
President Rodrigo Duterte said that the so-called narcolist that included Pérez’s name did not come from him.
The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency later said Perez was still cleared of his involvement in drug trafficking when he was shot and killed.
