PLDT Inc. said yesterday that its communication and Internet services will not be interrupted despite emergency maintenance work on submarine cables for the next six days, starting Saturday (September 26, 2020) at 8:00 a.m. to. Until Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at 5:00 a.m. M.

Asia-America Gateway (AAG), operator of the international trans-Pacific submarine cable system, has informed PLDT that it is performing emergency maintenance on AAG submarine cables in the waters of Hong Kong SAR.

“We want to assure our customers of continuous connectivity, as we have alternative cable systems to maintain our services during this maintenance period for AAG,” the telecommunications company said yesterday.

PLDT has been expanding and leveraging the capacity of new and existing international submarine cable systems, such as the Jupiter Cable and Asia Direct Cable systems, to provide redundancy in situations like this.

These investments are vital because most of the Internet content used by Filipinos comes from abroad.

PLDT assured customers that measures, such as traffic redirection and local caching, have already been implemented to minimize the impact of this activity.

Communication and Internet services will continue to be available to PLDT and Smart subscribers.

In the event that internet traffic increases beyond the traffic of the last few weeks, a slowdown in the busiest hours for traffic going to Asia is possible.

However, no service will be denied, PLDT said.

Also, Internet traffic within the Philippines and the United States will not be affected.
