Pinoys Top Google Search in 2020? It’s the American election
MANILA, Philippines – Considering its widespread impact on the lives of most people, the coronavirus pandemic may have been the most important event to occur this year.
But for Filipinos using the online search engine Google, it was the US presidential election that saw the defeat of reelectionist President Donald Trump that piqued their interest the most.
The tech company’s annual Year In Search released this week showed that the “2020 US Elections” were the most-searched query among Filipinos in 2020.
The “coronavirus” was only third on the list of general trends in the Philippines, after the “NBA score”, which refers to the National Basketball Association.
Other top sports-related searches include “NBA schedule” at sixth, “Kobe Bryant” at seventh, and “Lakers vs. Heat” at eighth.
NBA superstar Bryant, who retired in 2016 after a two-decade career with the Los Angeles Lakers, was killed along with his daughter Gianna and seven others in a helicopter crash in January.
The Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat met in the final of the 2019-2020 NBA season, which was affected by the pandemic.
Fourth in overall trending Google searches in the Philippines this year was “DepEd Commons,” the online learning platform developed by the Department of Education.
The “Taal Volcano”, which erupted in January, was sixth, while the “first day of school” is ninth. Rounding out the list is “www.reliefagad.ph”, the online platform where Filipinos can sign up for the cash grant provided by the government during closures.
According to Google, the list of the most searched queries provides an idea of what mattered most to Filipinos this year and how they navigated the uncertainties and challenges brought on by the pandemic.
“Looking back on the year that was, many Filipinos realized the importance of moving to digital technology now more than ever to seek answers and cope with the new changes happening around them,” said Geia López, Director Google Retail and Consumer Packaged Goods Analytics. Southeast Asia.
“Google is committed to making search of constant use to Filipinos as they depend on technology to find useful and trustworthy information and harness the benefits of the digital economy to succeed and grow,” he added.
Google also launched the most search queries by category, with “2020 US Elections” and “NBA Score” also topping the most searched news and sports articles, respectively.
Korean hit Crash Landing on You topped the Most Wanted TV Series and K-Drama categories, while its lead actor Hyun Bin was the Most Wanted Korean Personality.
“When I Look at You lyrics” by American singer Miley Cyrus topped the song and lyrics category, while the Philippine film Through Night and Day was the most searched film. Mobile game Among Us was the term most related to search games.
Actress Issa Pressman and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un were the most wanted female and male celebrities, respectively, while Bryant was the most wanted among those killed this year.
“How to make dalgona coffee?” topped the list of most wanted instructions, followed by “how to wear a surgical mask?”
Google said a new category for education emerged this year after a relative increase in academic-related searches following the shift to distance learning.
After “DepEd Commons” and “first day of school”, most of the search queries related to education were “English to Filipino translation”, “quadratic equation” and “Venn diagram”.
Around the world, Google said “Coronavirus” was the most searched term, followed by “Election Results”, “Kobe Bryant”, “Zoom” and “IPL” or the Indian Premier League for the sport of cricket.
Rounding out the global top 10 are “India vs New Zealand”, “Coronavirus Update”, “Coronavirus Symptoms”, “Joe Biden” and “Google Classroom”.
