MANILA, Philippines – In a sudden development, Phoenix said it decided to cut ties with head coach Louie Alas on Friday.

The club issued a statement saying Alas’s departure was made after “much deliberation.”

“With the possibility of a PBA restart, the Phoenix Super LPG Fuelmasters have begun discussions for future plans,” the club said in a statement. “After much deliberation, management has decided to discontinue the services of Mr. Louie Alas as head coach.”

Associate head coach Topex Robinson was elevated to Alas’ previous position on an interim basis.

“We believe in Coach Topex’s ability to lead this team and look forward to the resurgence of Fuelmasters as one of the exciting contenders in the league.”

Unfortunately, in the six full conferences he held the spot, he led the Super LPG Fuelmasters to two playoff appearances, both being first and second seeds.

Phoenix also suspended Alas last week for violating health protocols during practice after the team’s therapist bandaged his fingers, entered the Upper Deck gym during the scheduled time for another group of players, and entered the court prematurely while decontamination was carried out.

Alas said his mistakes were purely unintentional and that he himself told the team that he would be fined for his actions.

Phoenix finished first in the 2019 Philippines Cup with a 9-2 record before losing to eventual champion San Miguel and second in the 2018 Governor’s Cup with an 8-3 scorecard.
