MANILA, Philippines – Phoenix head coach Topex Robinson has long been an inspiring figure to his players, even while he was still training in the collegiate ranks. And now he hopes that the exploits of his team can also lift the spirits of those who just survived one of the strongest typhoons this year.
Robinson and the Fuel Masters dedicated their spirited 89-88 victory over Magnolia in the PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals and hoped the victory would serve their humble purpose of bringing joy, even a measly amount, to those who beat the Typhoon Ulysses.
“One of the things we discussed during the pregame meeting was joy,” Robinson said Saturday at the University of Angeles Foundation. “That is one of the pillars of our program, and we always tell them, we bring joy to the people affected by the typhoon.”
He added that no matter what team they support, the most important thing for them is to give the basketball watching community something to get excited about in the darkness that Ulises brought.
“What is important to us is that we are going to bring joy and hope to the people who watch the games, and we show it right there.”
Ulysses submerged much of Metro Manila and also lashed out at different parts of Luzon in what is considered one of the biggest environmental disasters of this year.
The typhoon, which made landfall in Luzon on Thursday, affected 285,978 families or 1,110,910 people and displaced 80,858 families or 306,340 people to evacuation centers, according to data from the National Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management.
“We just want to be resilient. You are going to go through difficult times, just don’t give up, persevere. I hope I have inspired a lot of people tonight with the way we play and communicate, ”said Robinson.
Hopefully the Philippines will rise from this. I know there will be many challenges ahead, but let’s stay together. “
