Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 11) – In a surprise move, Phoenix Super LPG Fuelmasters announced Friday that they are severing ties with head coach Louie Alas.

“With the possibility of a PBA reboot, Phoenix Super LPG Fuelmasters has started discussions on its future plans. After much deliberation, management decided to discontinue the services of Mr. Louie Alas as head coach,” the team said in a statement.

The Fuelmasters appointed associate head coach Topex Robinson as the team’s interim head coach.

“We believe in Coach Topex’s ability to lead this team and look forward to the resurgence of Fuelmasters as one of the league’s exciting contenders,” the club added.

Alas’s sudden firing came after team management suspended him last week for violating health protocols during his practice at Upper Deck Gym in Pasig City.

The 56-year veteran mentor signed a three-year coaching contract with the Phoenix franchise in 2017, replacing Ariel Vanguardia. Alas previously served as an assistant coach in Alaska before moving to Phoenix.

Alas guided the Dennis Uy-owned franchise to two conference semifinal stints during his tenure.
