Phase 3 of COVID-19 Vaccine Trials Set in November, DOH Says

MANILA, Philippines – Phase 3 of vaccine trials for the coronavirus disease, which has affected more than 330,000 people across the country, will begin this November, the Department of Health (DOH) revealed on Saturday.

“The Sub-Technical Working Group (sub-TWG) of the Inter-Institutional Working Group (IATF) on COVID-19 Vaccine Development led by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), along with other government agencies, is preparing to The Phase 3 clinical trials of the COVID-19 vaccine in the country that will begin next November, ”said DOH in a statement.

For Phase 3 of the clinical trials, thousands of patients will be injected to evaluate the safety and efficacy of COVID-19 injections.

On Thursday, the government revealed that it is reviewing the application of three international drug manufacturers to participate in phase 3 of the trials. These companies are Sinovac of China, Gamaleya Research Institute of Russia and Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, based in Belgium.

DOH has not yet disclosed the progress of the three companies’ request to conduct phase 3 clinical trials in the country.

DOST, which will lead the clinical trials, will also be assisted by government agencies such as the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the Department of Commerce and Industry (DTI) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), said the department of Health.

DOH said DFA will work with bilateral partnerships related to vaccine trials. The foreign department will also coordinate with the DTI and its attached agency, the National Development Company (NDC), for the possible production of the vaccines at local pharmaceutical companies.

DOH, vice president of the sub-TWG, will administer the logistics and manage the hospitals that would participate in the vaccine trials.

The FDA was tasked with monitoring facilities and manufacturers authorized to conduct clinical trials, the DOH said.

The agency “will also approve the vaccines that will be released and sold to the public,” the DOH added.
