MANILA – The Philippines have been chosen as one of the hosts for the February window of the FIBA Asian Cup Qualifiers (ACQ).
FIBA announced on Friday that the country is among the four nations that will each host a bubble in the final set of games to determine which teams will qualify for next year’s FIBA Asia Cup.
“Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) is honored and honored to be chosen as one of the hosts of the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers next February,” said SBP President Al Panlilio.
The Philippine bubble in ACQ’s third window is expected to resemble that of the recently concluded Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) season, which took place in Angeles City.
Teams will travel back and forth from the University of Angeles Foundation Sports and Cultural Center in downtown to their designated hotel of residence within the Clark Economic Zone.
Following the success of the PBA bubble, FIBA gave SBP the start signal to host a bubble.
“The most important criteria in the choice of hosts, as for the previous window, were health and travel guarantees and compliance with FIBA health protocols, including testing and controlled entry to a safe environment,” he said FIBA in a statement.
Panlilio, for his part, thanked FIBA for the decision.
“We are grateful for FIBA’s confidence in our ability to host not only a successful tournament but, more importantly, a safe one. We are happy to have met their health standards,” he said.
The Governor of the concurrent Meralco team thanked the PBA “for sharing with us their experience after successfully hosting the PBA bubble.”
“We are looking forward to working hand in hand with them, including the involved Philippine government agencies and other basketball stakeholders on this unique opportunity,” continued Panlilio.
The SBP will host the Angels bubble for two groups, namely Group A, where the host team Gilas Pilipinas Men, Southeast Asian neighbors Indonesia and Thailand, and rival South Korea, and Group C, formed for Australia, New Zealand, Guam and Hong Kong.
“The SBP is pleased to show you the same warmth of Filipino hospitality even in these difficult circumstances,” said Panlilio. (PNA)
