The number of new coronavirus infections reported in one day returned to the usual mark of 1,000 to 1,500, a day after the Department of Health (DOH) recorded more than 2,000 cases for the first time this month.

Health officials said an increase in coronavirus disease (Covid-19) has begun to manifest itself, especially in Metro Manila, after the DOH reported 2,122 cases on Friday, December 18.

However, on Saturday, December 19, the DOH noted in its case bulletin 1,491 new Covid-19 cases that brought the country’s total case count to 458,044.

The areas with the highest number of new cases are Quezon City (129), Rizal (102), Benguet (81), Davao City (75) and Laguna (54).

While the number of new cases declined on Saturday, the DOH said 36 more patients have succumbed to the disease.

This brought the death toll to 8,911 and the country’s fatality rate to 1.95 percent as of 4 p.m. Saturday.

The health department also recorded a total of 421,086 recoveries from Covid-19, with 436 more patients recovering from the disease. This means that 91.9 percent of Covid-19 patients have been able to recover.

Minus deaths and recoveries, active cases now number 28,047.

Active cases account for 6.1 percent of confirmed infections in the Philippines, the DOH said.

Of the active cases, 83.4 percent are mild cases, 8.8 percent are asymptomatic, 4.9 percent are critical cases, 2.5 percent are severe and 0.30 percent are considered moderate.

Globally, Covid-19 has affected 73,575,202 people from 222 areas in the world, as of December 19. Of these cases, 1,656,317 have died. (HDT / SunStar Philippines)
