MANILA (TO UPDATE)– The Department of Health (DOH) reported 1,014 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, bringing the country’s total to 472,532.
This after a couple of days of having fewer than 1,000 new cases per day due to the test drop attributed to the holidays. Not included in Wednesday’s count are the results of 7 labs that did not submit data on time.
Topping the list of areas with the most new cases are Quezon City with 67, Benguet with 57, Makati City with 48, Bulacan with 44 and Laguna with 40.
DOH also reported 68 new COVID-related deaths, the highest recorded in a single day since Dec. 8. This brings the total deaths to 9,230.
There were also 518 new recovered patients, or a total of 439,509 recoveries.
Active cases stood at 23,793, or 5 percent of the cumulative total. Of these, 79.7% present mild symptoms, 11% asymptomatic, 5.7% are in critical condition, 3.1% present severe symptoms, and 0.49% present moderate symptoms.
A total of 8 cases, 4 labeled as recovered, were removed from the official count due to duplicate entries.
There were also 21 recovered cases that turned out to be deaths upon final validation.
The OCTA Research Group previously estimated around 480,000 total COVID-19 cases in the Philippines by the end of the year.
The first confirmed coronavirus infection in the country was registered on January 30 in a Chinese woman who arrived from the city of Wuhan, China, where the disease is believed to have first appeared late last year.
Since the start of the pandemic, nearly 82 million people have been infected by the COVID-19 virus, according to the Johns Hopkins University coronavirus control panel. Of these, 1.79 million have died and 46.4 million have recovered.
