MANILA (TO UPDATE) – The number of COVID-19 cases in the country rose to 257,863 after counting 4,935 new confirmed cases of the highly contagious virus, the fifth consecutive day that the country recorded more than 3,000 additional cases.

The total number of recoveries is now 187,116.

The country also recorded 186 new deaths from the highly contagious disease, bringing the death toll to 4,292, significantly higher than the 42 deaths recorded last Friday.

The DOH said 82 percent of the cases reported this Saturday were confirmed from Aug. 30 to Sept. 12.

At the time of writing, the Philippines has 66,455 active cases of coronavirus, of which 89.2 percent of patients have mild symptoms, according to official figures from the Department of Health.

Only one laboratory did not submit the results in time for the last report.

The DOH previously said it expected an “irregularly high number of cases this week,” as labs catch up due to reporting delays.

Since the start of the pandemic, nearly 28.2 million people worldwide have been infected by the COVID-19 virus, according to the Johns Hopkins University coronavirus control panel. Of these, 909,000 have died and almost 19 million have recovered.
