Barring unforeseen circumstances, the 2020 Philippine Soccer League bubble season sponsored by Qatar Airways will kick off on Wednesday at the PFF National Training Center in Cavite.
The biggest development was first announced by the Chairman of the Board of Games and Entertainment, Baham Mitra, who shared the big news on his Twitter account.
“PFL will start the League with 6 teams (less positive players) on Wednesday in coordination and approval of LGU of Santa Rosa and Carmona”, he said.
The sudden announcement marked a turning point from yesterday’s big news, which indicated that the opening of the league was postponed due to inclement weather caused by Typhoon Quinta along with the fact that nine people tested positive for the coronavirus disease in initial league testing on Oct. 16 and 21 when they entered the league quarters at the Hotel Seda in Santa Rosa, Laguna.
Veteran journalist Cedelf Tupas also shared the great news by interviewing several league players in a Zoom online conference on the league’s official Facebook page. The Bacolod native shared the word from PFL Commissioner Coco Torre that “The virus has been contained” and that the games will take place on Wednesday.
However, nothing is yet known about the calendar changes caused by the postponement of the first day and the new end date of the 2020 season of the competition. The important thing is that the games begin and that your bubble remains intact.
Without a doubt, the formal start of the PFL will be a huge boost for the resumption of sports in the Philippines amid the COVID-19 pandemic. It will also be a huge boost for soccer in the country, as the league’s protocols can be passed down for use in other tournaments.
