Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 24) – The Philippine Football League announced that it postponed its scheduled start for Sunday to a few days later after nine people, including a coach and five players, contracted the coronavirus disease.
League management said in a statement Saturday that the coach and players were from two soccer clubs and were screened on October 16 and 21 before entering the league “bubble” in Seda Nuvali, Sta. Rosa , Lagoon. Close contacts of the cases were also subsequently tested and three more people tested positive, management said.
“We have anticipated this scenario, therefore there is a set of health and safety protocols for incidents like this one,” said PFL Commissioner Coco Torre. “The important thing is that everyone continues to comply with the protocols that aim to prevent or minimize the spread of the virus.”
The PFL did not mention a new start date, but noted that if its first three games on Sunday take place in Carmona, Cavite, they could be interrupted by bad weather due to the “Fifth” Tropical Depression.
