The Philippine Football League (PFL) decided to postpone its 2020 season opener originally scheduled for Sunday October 25 due to the Fifth Tropical Depression.

Quinta was expected to present inclement weather on the initially scheduled opening day, which would have shown three games at the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) national training center in Carmona, Cavite.

At the opening of the curtain, the Azkals development team was supposed to face Mendiola FC at 9 am, followed by the match between Stallion FC Laguna and Kaya FC Iloilo at 4:30 pm

Newcomer Maharlika Manila FC and United City FC were supposed to meet in the main event at 8pm

To make matters worse was also the return of positive tests for Covid-19 from the PFL delegation located at the Hotel Seda Nuvali in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

Through three test dates on October 16, 20 and 24, nine people (five players, a coach, and three close contacts) tested positive for Covid-19.

The league already put them in an isolation facility.

“We have anticipated this scenario, so there is a set of health and safety protocols for incidents like this. The important thing is that everyone continues to comply with the protocols that aim to prevent or minimize the spread of the virus. By verifying, we confirmed that those who tested positive admitted that they had close contact with the player who was the first to test positive, ”said PFL Commissioner Coco Torre.

Still, the league, as well as the PFF, hope to advance in the tournament in a few days.

“We place an emphasis on the safety of each and every person in the bubble, whether they are players, staff or party official,” said PFF Secretary General Atty. Edwin Gastanes. “We understand the current situation and with participants’ strict compliance with specific bubble protocols, we hope to move forward with the start in a few days.”
