MANILA, Philippines – Some local governments and schools chose to suspend work and classes for Wednesday despite the prevalence of online classes and work-from-home schemes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The suspensions were declared Tuesday as a precaution due to bad weather caused by Tropical Storm Pepito when it pounced on Aurora.

The storm, known internationally as Saudel, was expected to break through the Luzon landmass between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Suspensions apply in the following areas:

La Trinidad, Benguet – government jobs and classes at all levels, public and private

Our Lady of Perpetual Soccor College Marikina in Metro Manila – all levels

Coronado’s School of Quezon City – all levels

According to the government of La Trinidad, the suspension of government jobs and classes would allow families to better prepare for the storm, considering that Benguet and other areas of the Cordillera Administrative Region had been subjected to the Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 .

The management of the Colegio Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro Marikina said that it suspended classes to avoid possible Internet connection problems, since the signals could be interrupted by the continuous rains.

The #WalangPasok hashtag was trending on Twitter as a joke, as people pointed out that classes might not be suspended considering they were held online anyway.

But it turned out that the storm could affect online classes as well.

Earlier, Pepito intensified slightly, with maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour near the center, with gusts of up to 90 kilometers per hour, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
