MANILA – The board of governors of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) moved to adopt a “semi-bubble” format for the resumption of its postponed season.
The 12-member teams will travel to Angeles City in Pampanga to converge for the reboot of the season scheduled for October 9.
The clubs will be staying at the Quest Hotel in the Clark district of the city, while all games will take place at the Angeles University Foundation (AUF) Sports and Cultural Center.
“We are ready and excited,” PBA Chairman Ricky Vargas said Thursday after a meeting that approved the revised tournament format.
In the semi-bubble, teams will only travel from the AUF Gym to the Quest Hotel and vice versa.
In addition to strict travel guidelines, other 2019 coronavirus disease safety protocols will be implemented during the semi-bubble.
“When they leave, they have no salary for a month, may penalty fee them 100K in PBA to discontinued they (If they come out, they won’t have a salary for a month, the PBA will fine them PHP100,000 and suspend them) for five games next season, “Commissioner Willie Marcial said. Wrong players.
While the season is at its core the Philippine Cup, the PBA board of directors adopted the Governor’s Cup playoff format for the postseason.
The top four teams after the regular season will earn two-time leads in the quarterfinals, while Final 4 will meet two best-of-five semifinals and the winners advance to the best-of-seven finals.
The result of the only game played so far this season, San Miguel’s 94-78 win over Magnolia on March 8, will continue to be credited, meaning the PBA will restart with the remainder of the regular season.
Two games will be played every day during the regular season, while daily games will also occur in the first two rounds of the playoffs, meaning the PBA’s “compact” season is expected to end before Christmas.
In preparation for the restart of the season, the PBA has requested permission from the Interagency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases to resume practices by September 27.
The teams are scheduled to depart for Angeles on September 26. (PNA)
