The PBA believes it can return to a traditional three-conference format if plans for the 46th season are carried out in April.

PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial said after Thursday’s virtual meeting with members of the Board of Governors that many factors will have to influence before determining the length of the 2021 season.

That’s why he’s asked board members to take a wait-and-see approach, much like several months ago when the league finally decided to organize the ongoing bubble in Clark, Pampanga.

There’s also the FIBA Asia Cup and potential international windows that may force the league to stretch its schedule should it decide to have the Central Philippines Cup and the Commissioner’s Cup and the Governor’s Cup.

“We already have an exact date, but it still depends on the vaccine, what kind of bubble, economy, place. So I said if we can see in February what the situation is, “said Marcial.

“We will have up to three conferences, but it will end in January. And FIBA is not there yet because even FIBA, they don’t know their schedule either so we can’t study yet, “added Marcial.

The league shortened its 45th season to just the Philippine Cup after the COVID-19 pandemic forced it to suspend games for seven months.

Games resumed in October inside the Smart Clark Giga City bubble and the season is now drawing to a close with Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and TNT vying for the Philippine Cup crown.
