DAVAO CITY, South Davao, Philippines – A passenger on a sweeping flight from Manila to this city tested positive for the new coronavirus last Wednesday, Mayor Sara Duterte said in a statement released Saturday.

The passenger’s swab sample was confirmed positive for the virus through the RT-PCR test, he said.

RT-PCR stands for real-time reverse transcription: polymerase chain reaction.

The sweeping flight brought residents of the Davao region stranded in Manila and tourists transported stranded in the city to Manila.

At least 270 residents of the Davao region took advantage of the free sweeper flight from Manila to Davao City.

Before sweeper flights were approved, Duterte and the Region 11 Health Department established a screening process at Francisco Bangoy International Airport to ensure passengers with COVID-19 were screened upon arrival.

“One of the passengers did not pass the health examination and was sent to SPMC [Southern Philippines Medical Center] for taking samples and then he was confined in a COVID-19 quarantine center, “the statement said.

The City Health Office is now contacting other passengers who were sitting near the patient during the flight.

“We remind all passengers on the May 6 flight from Manila, if they develop symptoms within 14 days, they should go to SPMC for evaluation,” the statement added.

Relatives and housemates of passengers were advised to avoid direct physical contact during the 14-day quarantine period.

The public is also advised not to approach passengers for the next 14 to 21 days to avoid infection.
