Palace: not ‘white sand’, but ‘crushed dolomite rocks’ used in Manila Bay

MANILA, Philippines – It is “wrong” to say that white sand was used to cover the coast of Manila Bay, Malacañang said on Friday, noting that “crushed dolomite rocks” were used in the makeover.

“On the issue of the rehabilitation of Manila Bay, according to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the report that ‘white sand’ is being used to fill the stretch of the promenade is erroneous,” said the Presidential spokesman Harry Roque in a statement.

“DENR added that ‘crushed dolomite boulders’ would be used for the aforementioned project,” he added.

Roque said funds for the Manila Bay rehabilitation project were already allocated even before the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic broke out.

Ecologists and fishermen groups disputed DENR’s project, calling it “artificial rehabilitation” that focused on appearance.

But DENR undersecretary Benny Antiporda came out in defense of the project and said that discourage littering in Manila Bay. [ac]
