PAGASA: Scattered showers to affect parts of Luzon as Typhoon Julian moves out of PAR
MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon Julian is gaining strength as it moves north over the Philippine Sea, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
At 10:00 p.m. on Monday, the eye of Typhoon Julian was located 715 km east of Basco, Batanes.
It is moving north at 20 km / h with maximum sustained winds of 150 km / h near the center and gusts of up to 185 km / h.
It will stay away from the mainland and is expected to leave the Philippines Area of Responsibility (PAR) tonight (Aug 31) or Tuesday (Sept 1).
Typhoon Julian is seen to intensify further within the next 24 to 48 hours and may reach peak intensity during the day or Tuesday.
PAGASA has not generated any tropical cyclone wind signals anywhere in the country as it is unlikely during the forecast period.
However, the southwest monsoon and outer ‘Julian’ rainbands will bring light to moderate rainfall, sometimes with heavy rainfall in the following areas:
- Ilocos region
- Cordillera Administrative Region
- Fulling
- Babuyan Islands
- Cagayan
- Isabella
- dawn
- Zambales
- Bataan
- Cavita
- Batangas
- Occidental Mindoro
- Northern Palawan, including the Calamian Islands
Likewise, the combined effects of the tropical cyclone and the southwest monsoon will bring cloudy skies with scattered showers and thunderstorms over Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon.
Meanwhile, areas in the Visayas and Mindanao will have partly cloudy to overcast skies with isolated rains due to the impact of monsoon rains and localized thunderstorms.
Tropical storm Julian could intensify into typhoon on Sunday – PAGASA
Tropical Cyclone Julian intensified into a tropical storm on Friday, the Philippines’ Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
In its 5 p.m. severe weather bulletin, PAGASA said Julian was estimated to be 880 kilometers east of the city of Tuguegarao, Cagayan, with maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 80 kph.
Julian is expected to escalate into a severe tropical storm on Saturday and turn into a typhoon by Sunday morning, the weather agency said.
It is expected to move west-northwest on Friday night, then turn north on Saturday and northwest on Sunday.
“He is likely to leave the Philippine area of responsibility on Monday,” PAGASA said.
The meteorological office said the tropical cyclone wind signal is unlikely to increase during the forecast period and less likely to directly cause high-impact weather in the country.
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon is forecast to bring moderate to rough seas over the north and west coasts of northern Luzon.
PAGASA advised small vessels to take precautionary measures while venturing out to sea.
PAGASA: La Niña phenomenon likely in September or early October
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced on Thursday (August 27) that there is a 60 percent chance that the La Niña phenomenon will develop by the end of next month.
Specifically for the end of September or the beginning of October, the phenomenon is expected to bring more precipitation than usual.
According to PAGASA, such a climatic condition could persist until next year, preferably in February 2021, even during the monsoon season or Northeast Amihan.
According to PAGASA’s forecast, the country can expect at least seven to ten tropical cyclones until early next year.
La Niña is a meteorological pattern characterized by unusually cooler than average sea surface temperatures and more frequent rainfall than usual.
PAGASA monitors LPA east of Borongan city, eastern Samar
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Astronomical, Geophysical and Atmospheric Services Administration (PAGASA) is monitoring a low pressure area (LPA) located east of Borongan City in eastern Samar.
According to PAGASA, LPA is less likely to turn into a tropical depression in the next 48 hours.
However, disaster authorities are advised to continue to monitor for updates on this weather disturbance.
Regarding the PAGASA rain forecast, the LPA will bring light to moderate rains with heavy rains at times over Eastern Visayas, Central Visayas, Bicol Region, Quezon Province, including Polillo Island, Aurora and Isabela.
Similar weather conditions will also prevail in Metro Manila, MIMAROPA, rest of CALABARZON, rest of central Luzon, western Visayas and Zamboanga Peninsula for the effects of the southwest monsoon.
