MANILA – The “Julian” weather disturbance intensified into a severe tropical storm on Saturday and remains nearly stationary but far from the country’s landmass, the state meteorological office said.

Julian was last seen 850 kilometers east of the city of Tuguegarao in Cagayán, with maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 115 kilometers per hour, according to the PAGASA weather bulletin issued at 5 A.M.

PAGASA said Julian is forecast to continually intensify and could reach typhoon status by Sunday.

He is expected to leave the Philippine area of responsibility on Monday night.

No tropical cyclone wind signal was issued as PAGASA said Julian is less likely to directly cause high-impact weather in the country.

Small craft are advised to take precautionary measures while venturing out to sea, as the southwest monsoon is expected to bring moderate to rough seas over the northern shores of Luzon and the east coast of central Luzon.
