MANILA, Philippines – Tropical Storm Rolly, known internationally as Goni, finally left the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Tuesday night, nearly a day after its departure was forecast.

Rolly departed PAR across the Western Philippine Sea border at 11:00 pm, according to the latest severe weather bulletin of the day from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Rolly left a trail of destruction, and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) estimated the damage to infrastructure at P5.76 billion. Meanwhile, the death toll stood at 16, according to the Civil Defense Office.

After entering PAR on October 29 as a severe tropical storm, Rolly rapidly intensified, becoming a typhoon overnight and then a super typhoon with wind speeds exceeding 220 kph.

As of now, it stands as the strongest typhoon of 2020 to make landfall, drawing comparisons to Super Typhoon Haiyan, known locally as Yolanda, the strongest cyclone to make landfall in recorded history.

Initially, Rolly was predicted to hit Aurora and northern Quezon, but instead deviated from its trajectory, targeting the Bicol region and southern Luzon.

The provinces of Bicol de Camarines Sur, Albay and Catanduanes appeared to be the most affected areas when Rolly pounced on the region at its maximum intensity.

With Rolly’s departure, Pagasa turned his attention to monitoring another weather disturbance, Tropical Storm Siony, which was last located 610 km east of Basco, Batanes.

It was expected to hit the northern tip of Luzon, though it still had a wide cone of probability, or ranges that it could eventually move to. It could move north to southern Taiwan or to Ilocos Norte and northern Cagayan.

It can make landfall between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, Pagasa said.
