MANILA – More than 1,700 Filipinos abroad have been infected with the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Friday.

The DFA said in a statement that 30 more Filipinos abroad were diagnosed with COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases to 1,707.

Of the total, 1,050 are in treatment, while 455 have recovered. The remaining 202 died from the disease.

The Foreign Ministry said the number of international countries or regions that have cases of infected Filipinos has increased to 46.

Europe leads the continents with the highest infection among Filipinos abroad with 496, followed by the Americas with 473. The Asia-Pacific region has 373 Philippine cases, while the Middle East and Africa, where cases are counted together, collectively they have 365.

“DFA worldwide records an average of nearly 43 new cases of COVID-19 daily among Filipinos abroad in the past month,” the department said.

The DFA expressed its gratitude to Filipino workers “here and abroad for their sacrifices, as well as for their dedication and commitment to serve as a pandemic at this time.”

The Philippine government has been repatriating Filipinos abroad who wish to return home as countries around the world fight against the coronavirus disease. Upon arrival in Manila, they are sent to facilities where they will spend the mandatory 14-day quarantine period before they can go to their respective home cities.
