Berelands House confirmed that 16 residents have died since April 4.

Three Scottish nursing homes have seen a total of 32 deaths this month after suspected Covid-19 outbreaks.

Berelands Care Home in Prestwick confirmed that 16 residents have died since April 4.

Previously, 11 residents at the Elderslie Nursing Home in Paisley emerged and five at the Wyndwell Nursing Home in Peterhead also died.

Official figures show that a quarter of Scotland’s coronavirus deaths have now occurred in nursing homes.

Previous outbreaks in nursing homes have resulted in the deaths of residents at Burlington Court Care Home, Cranhill; Almond Court at Drumchapel; and Castle View Care Home in Dumbarton.

Berelands Care Home confirmed that four of the residents who died tested positive for Covid-19, while 12 are suspected to have died of virus-related symptoms.

Two other residents have tested positive and are being cared for at home.

Five residents have died at the Wyndwell nursing home in Peterhead

A house spokesperson said: “Our deepest condolences go out to families at this difficult time and we offer them our continued support.

“We are working tirelessly to care for the residents of our home and we follow all government guidelines.

“Our team is trained in infection prevention and control, including using the correct level of PPE for the protection of residents and themselves.”

Advinia Health Care, the operators at Elderslie Care Home, said 13 other patients showed symptoms and were being “cared for at the barrier.”

Meanwhile, seven residents of Wyndwell Nursing Home in Peterhead also show symptoms.

Renaissance Care operators said three staff members tested positive and isolated themselves.

‘We are grieving with you’

As first reported in The Scottish Sun, none of the residents showing symptoms in Paisley have confirmed that they have the virus.

A spokesperson said the facility was following Health Protection Scotland’s infection control protocol, as well as its own existing measures, including the provision of PPE.

He added: “Unfortunately, like hundreds of care homes across the country, we are now seeing an increase in Covid-19 cases as the virus peaks.

“Our highest priority now is the safety and well-being of the 106 residents who have made Elderslie their home and also that of our selfless staff who work tirelessly to help some of the most vulnerable members of our community.

“We send our deepest condolences to families who have lost someone dear to them, we are grieving with you.”

The Care Inspection confirmed that it was aware of deaths as a result of Covid-19 suspicion and that it was in contact with the care service and the local health and social care association.

‘Deepest sympathy’

A spokesperson added: “Our thoughts are with the loved ones of those affected, as well as with the staff and the broader community in the home.

“The entire Scottish social care sector is working tirelessly under very difficult circumstances to care for people during the pandemic and the Care Inspectorate is doing everything possible to support them.”

In response to Peterhead’s deaths, Renaissance Care said: “Despite the best efforts of our courageous and committed staff, five Wyndwell Nursing Home residents have died with symptoms that may be related to Covid-19 in recent days.

“Our deepest sympathy is with their families and loved ones at this difficult time. Seven other residents are also currently symptomatic of the virus.

“We cannot confirm that coronavirus is the cause as we have so far been unable to evaluate residents, however three members of Wyndwell’s staff team have tested positive for Covid-19 externally and are now self-isolating.”
