MANILA, Philippines – Eduard Folayang knew he only had a slim chance of winning in his lightweight fight against Antonio Caruso, but he couldn’t find the perfect opening for that shot.
Losing in the first two rounds, Folayang looked at that knockout against the taller Australian, but as in the first two rounds, it was Caruso’s length that still proved the difference.
Folayang said he wanted to finish the match in third with a knockout blow, but was unable to pull it off, ultimately losing to Caruso by unanimous decision at ONE: Inside the Matrix.
“I looked for it, but I couldn’t execute it well,” Folayang told the post-fight virtual press conference on Friday from the indoor stadium in Singapore.
“I really do evaluate myself and I really need to see what went wrong and, like I said before, I really need to see what is wrong. It’s my mistake and I couldn’t face it. “
Caruso, who is 5ft 11in, had no trouble jabbing at 5ft9in Folayang and a right uppercut found the Filipino’s jaw in the second round and sent Folayang to the canvas.
Folayang (22-10) turned more aggressive in the third, but an accidental header derailed his momentum and allowed Caruso to successfully shoot for a takedown.
With just seconds to go, Folayang attempted a guillotine choke but Caruso (8-1) managed to survive the last submission attempt.
However, Folayang, 36, was happy to be able to fight again after nine months.
“There are a lot of adjustments, but it’s good to be back,” Folayang said. “It is not the result we wanted.”
