Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena set the new Filipino and his personal best by clinching the silver medal at the 2021 Orlen Cup early Saturday (Philippine time) in Lodz, Poland.

After three attempts, the 25-year-old Obiena surpassed 5.86 meters, marking the third time she set the national and own record.

Obiena, who was heading to the Tokyo Olympics, initially set the national record of 5.62m, earning her fifth place at the Karlsruhe World Indoor Tour Meeting on January 30.

A week later, Obiena set the record for the second time by surpassing 5.80m to win gold at the Istaf Indoor Athletics Meet in Berlin, Germany, on February 6.

In this Orlen Cup, Obiena tried three times to surpass the 5.91 mark and win the gold, but did not succeed.

That left American Sam Kendricks winning gold while jumping the 5.91-meter jump. Kendricks also hit the 5.86 mark. Brazilian Thiago Braz captured the bronze with his 5.80m performance. NIEL VICTOR C. MASOY
