NUPL observes raps vs. BJMP staff for tension in Baby River wake

MANILA, Philippines – The National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) is studying the filing of complaints against the staff of the Bureau of Penitentiary and Penitentiary Management (BJMP) who were involved in the tension that erupted during the wake of activist Queen Mae Nasino -Eldest daughter on Wednesday.

“We will seriously look into the filing of administrative and contempt charges against the principal and the escorts in the incident yesterday at the Baby River wake,” said NUPL President Atty. Edre Olalia said in a text message read during a press conference held Thursday by Kapatid, a support group for family and friends of political prisoners.

Olalia also confirmed it in a text message to INQUIRER.net.

“Yes, we will seriously study that legal option. But given the whirlwind of events and problems at hand, we will choose our battles and fight them at the right time. In the meantime, we seek an emotional moratorium until the dust of cruelty and barbarism has settled, ”he said.

Tension rose during Nasino’s visit to his daughter River’s wake on Wednesday when her guards prevented her from being interviewed by members of the media.

Prior to this, the Manila Regional Court of First Instance also shortened the permission it gave Nasino to visit his daughter’s wake from three days in a row to just three hours for two days: from 1 pm to 4 pm on the 14th and October 16.

The court issued the order after being informed by the Manila City Jail that it has a limited number of staff to escort Nasino during the leave.
