MANILA, Philippines – With more than a quarter of the country’s total population projected to be in the path of Super Typhoon Rolly, government agencies rushed Sunday to be all on the job to prepare for the impact.

In a briefing on Sunday, following Rolly’s second landing in Tiwi, Albay, the executive director of the Civil Defense Office and the National Council for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction, Ricardo Jalad, said that up to 31.9 million of Filipinos are on the anticipated path of the super typhoon in 12 regions as it moves west southwest.

“Based on the current projected trajectory of super typhoon Rolly, an estimated population of 19.8 million is exposed to the typhoon within its 60 kilometers in diameter and 31.9 million within its 120 km in diameter. These are made up of 4.2 million households within those 60 km in diameter and 7.1 million households within 120 km in diameter, ”said Jalad.

He said that the “exposed population” is from Metro Manila; the Bicol region; Calabarzon; Mimaropa; Central Luzon; the Ilocos region; Cagayan Valley; the Cordillera Administrative Region; the eastern Visayas; Central Visayas; the Western Visayas and the Zamboanga Peninsula.

As of Sunday morning, 96,543 families or 346,993 people were evacuated in a preventive manner to safer ground in Metro Manila, CAR, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Bicol and Eastern Visayas.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines has recruited some 4,000 of its personnel for disaster response units, while the Department of Health has previously placed some P26.5 million medicines, first aid kits and personal protective equipment in the different development centers. of health with another P21.6 million on hold at DOH headquarters.

Jalad noted: “For the group of food and non-food products headed by the Department of Social Welfare and Development, family food packages have been prepared in various strategic locations throughout the country. DSWD has prepared 114,007 family meal packages and has put about P282.8 million in funds on hold for relief efforts.

Flight operations at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) were shut down as of 10 am Sunday for “the safety of air passengers and personnel from the threat of Super Typhoon Rolly.”

The aviation industry agreed to a 24-hour closure of all flight operations following an assessment of the super typhoon threat to flight and passenger safety.

According to the General Manager of the Manila International Airport Authority, Ed Monreal, “During the 24-hour closure, the Naia terminals will be closed,” calling on the public not to go to the Naia while it is closed.

Monreal advised passengers to immediately coordinate with their airlines to receive instructions on their new flight schedules, adding: “Once Naia reopens at 10 am on November 2, priority will be given to the same scheduled flights. day. The flights affected by the 24-hour closure will be scheduled in such a way as to cause minimal delay in passenger travel plans. “

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) was also placed on full alert with a no-sail policy in effect in anticipation of Rolly’s attack.

PCG units in Bicol, the National Capital Region, the Southern Tagalog Region and the Eastern Visayas have made preparations to immediately respond to maritime incidents in the areas.
