NCR Mayors Recommend 3 Quarantine Options After ECQ Deadline May 15

MANILA (UPDATE) – A group representing all the mayors of Metro Manila offered three quarantine options on Saturday, as the current blockade on the entire metro will expire in a week.

According to the general manager of the Manila Metropolitan Development Authority, Jojo García, one recommendation is to extend the current blockade for a maximum of 15 days after the May 15 deadline.

Another option is to implement quarantine for the general community, which would allow some companies to operate and make public transportation work.

A third recommendation is a form of GCQ, in which local government units can impose a blockade on barangays that have a substantial number of COVID-19 cases.

The recommendations and scenarios will be presented to the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases, the group of government agencies focused on the response to coronavirus in the Philippines.

Garcia said that his side will allow the national government to decide “what is the appropriate option for Metro Manila.”

“We will respect the wisdom of the IATF to decide. We and the mayors of Metro Manila will continue and be ready,” he said.

Experts previously warned against a sudden change to the improved community quarantine in Metro Manila, as it could lead to an increase in coronavirus cases in the capital region.

As of Saturday, the Philippines recorded 10,610 cases of COVID-19, of which 704 died and 1,842 recovered.

Of the total number of cases in the country, more than half were registered in Metro Manila .– Report by Jeff Hernaez, ABS-CBN News
