MANILA, Philippines – The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has summoned Margaux “Mocha” Uson, deputy administrator of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), for violating the Bayanihan to heal as a single law.
“The Cyber Crimes Division is investigating her for fake news,” said NBI Deputy Director and Spokesman Ferdinand Lavin.
Lavin said the NBI measure is in line with Attorney General Menardo Guevarra’s orders to investigate all possible violations of quarantine protocols.
“Included in the NBI investigation into false news as ordered by the Attorney General,” he said.
The subject of the call incident is one of Mocha’s posts on his popular blog on personal protective equipment (PPE) purchased by the Department of Health (DOH). His post was accompanied by a photo of the frontline artists using EPP.
Netizens called his post saying the photo showed PPE donated by a chain of shopping malls, not the government. Uson then edited the post and apologized.
Section 6 (f) of the Bayanihan Law establishes that: “The persons or groups that create, perpetuate or disseminate false information about the COVID-19 crisis on social networks and other platforms, such information does not have a valid beneficial effect for the population, and are clearly aimed at promoting chaos, panic, anarchy, fear or confusion; and those who participate in cyber incidents that make us take advantage of the current crisis situation to take advantage of the public through scams, phishing, Fraudulent emails or other similar acts. “
