The “ACCIDENTAL fire” was the cause of the death of an official from the National Investigations Office (NBI) who was found with a gunshot wound in his office earlier this week, Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said Friday.
He said that the information on lawyer Raoul Manguerra was transmitted to him by the director of the NBI, Eric Distor, and the official’s widow, Ma. Rosario Bernardo.
“Accidental fire, that’s what the head of OIC NBI told me and the widow of lawyer Manguerra this morning,” Guevarra added, but emphasized that it was not clear who fired.
“Who shot, he (Distor) did not elaborate. I have asked for an official report, ”said the head of the Justice Department. “However, foul play seems out of place.”
Manguerra is the head of the NBI’s anti-terrorism division. He was found dead with a gunshot wound inside his office on December 8, a non-work holiday.
An initial police report said Manguerra had a “gunshot wound to the abdomen” and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the nearby Manila Medical Hospital around 12:02 am.
Manguerra was reportedly taken to hospital by the victim’s driver and an occasional NBI employee.
It was also reported that Manguerra had just come off a medical leave. The victim’s widow said she had stage 3 colon cancer.
