As many of us expected, the Los Angeles Lakers are going to see a familiar opponent on the opening night of the NBA season: The LA Clippers. And when the league leaked that the Lakers would face the Dallas Mavericks on Christmas Day, the opening night opponent of the purple and gold seemed like a foregone conclusion.
The Athletic’s Shams Charania broke history:
The NBA’s Dec. 22 opening night tentative doubleheader on TNT: Nets vs. Warriors in Brooklyn and Lakers vs. Clippers in Los Angeles, sources say. @AthleticNBA @Stadium.

Look, the NBA is certainly going to get the best of its money from this rivalry that clearly wants to turn into something very bad, and to be fair, even if Lakers fans want to deny the Clippers the honor of being considered “rivals.” , These Certainly, two teams do not love each other. The Lakers and Clippers will also play two games with each other to open the preseason, so any meat that has gone cold will have a brief period in the microwave to start the year.
But there is also another, more practical reason this is turning into something: the coronavirus and travel. That these two teams meet twice in the preseason Y Right at the start of the regular season allows two NBA teams to skip a bit of travel and stay in one place isolating themselves from trying to establish new precautions on the road. This also makes sense from a logistical perspective, even if the NBA is surely also pleased that this is an intriguing showdown with some bad blood between the two rosters in their second-largest market. And hey, if we have some fun, competitive basketball right at the beginning of all of this as a bonus, none of us are going to complain either.
The full schedule for the Lakers is expected to be released soon. Stay tuned to Silver Screen and Roll for the latest updates.
