NBA G-League elite prospect team to be called Ignite

SAN FRANCISCO – An elite group of global prospects trained by five-time NBA champion Brian Shaw and training in suburban San Francisco will be called the NBA G-League Ignite, the league announced Wednesday.

The international group working at Walnut Creek, the top talent who would normally seek college stardom as a freshman in America’s schools, is part of a year-long program aimed at preparing players for the NBA Draft. .

“We are delighted to officially announce NBA G League Ignite as the name of our new team for the elite prospects,” said NBA G League President Shareef Abdur-Rahim.

“We think it is an appropriate nickname for a group made up of young players taking the first step of their promising professional careers.”

Pincepal Singh of India, a graduate of the NBA Global Academy in Australia, is on the team, which also includes the 2.18-meter Filipino center Kai Sotto, Filipino-American point guard Jalen Green, Congolese forward Jonathan Kuminga and American forward. Isaiah Todd and US guard Daishen Nix.

Players receive tutoring and coaching in life skills and pro money as they prepare for the NBA.

“These players have a passion for the game and a desire to develop their skills to the next level,” said Abdur-Rahim. “We are very proud that they broke ground as inaugural members of NBA G League Ignite.”

Ignite has started training with Shaw with one-on-one skill development training. Later they will play games against G-League teams, NBA team development clubs and some international teams.

Shaw, 54, won three NBA titles between 2000 and 2002 with the Los Angeles Lakers and two more in 2009 and 2010 as an assistant coach with the Lakers.
