MANILA – Chief Deputy State Attorney Juan Pedro “JP” Navera, among the state attorneys who handled important cases in his time, has died, Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra confirmed Tuesday. He was 49 years old.
“Very sad. He was one of our best,” the chief justice said in a statement.
Navera’s cause of death was not disclosed.
Navera served on indictment panels in several major cases.
He got the conviction of retired Army Major General Jovito Palparan, who was found guilty of the disappearance of 2 college students in 2006.
The National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers (NUPL), which acted as private prosecutor in the case, praised Navera for his cross-examination of Palparan, describing him as a “principled, brilliant and quintessential professional.”
“We also owe it to JP and his prosecution team for putting the Butcher behind bars,” the group of lawyers said.
He was also on the first panel of prosecutors that handled cases against those responsible for the Maguindanao massacre, followed the state’s case against Philippine Coast Guard officers identified in the shooting death of a Taiwanese fisherman on the Balintang Canal, and cases against police officers charged in the kidnapping-murder of South Korean businessman Jee Ick-joo.
