Rain or Shine Elasto Painters head coach Caloy Garcia is grateful to have two young stars who can take over when needed.
Rising stars Rey Nambatac and Javee Mocon led the way for Rain or Shine, combining to score more than a third of the team’s 91 points in the win over Terrafirma Dyip.
Fresh off his heroics in the season opener against San Miguel, Nambatac dropped 19 markers, nine of which came in the fourth quarter. Their last three points, which were launched several steps beyond the arc, were the icing on the cake for the Elasto Painters, who pushed the lead to a comfortable nine-point difference, 85-76, with 2:43 to play.
“I think Rey was more aggressive scoring today. Last game, he was trying to feed other players. Rey is a great player. He is going to end up as one of those PBA superstars,” Garcia noted in postgame press . conference.
“That’s what I see in him because he has the guts to take shots. We were already playing badly, he came in and started taking those 3-point shots from way off the 3-point line. I think it’s just about trusting.” . each other, “he added.
The other bright spot for the Elasto Painters in the win was Javee Mocon.
Recipient of Garcia’s confidence, Mocón scored 14 after playing 44 minutes in the victory. He played 37 minutes in the previous game where he scored 25. Though it didn’t appear on the stat sheet, Mocon’s length helped Rain or Shine’s defense put down their opponents to just 36.8% shooting overall.
“The good thing about Javee in the All-Filipino conference is that he can mark several players … As it happened in the first game, he played spectacular, today he made some mistakes but his defense is there,” Garcia said.
