SMART CLARK GIGA CITY: When things went wrong, Roger Pogoy looked up.
Pogoy admitted to calling for divine intervention when he was fighting from the field before TNT’s 92-79 win over Meralco on Saturday night at the AUF Arena.
After averaging 21.7 points in the first seven games, including a career-high 45 points in bubble opener, the 28-year-old guard was limited to just seven markers in a measly 3-of-14 clip at Tropang Giga’s 102. 92 loss to the Magnolia Hotshots on Wednesday.
The Cebuano continued to lose on Friday night, scoring 12 points on a bitter 4-for-15 field goal in TNT’s 85-79 loss to Geneva.
“In my last two games, I really struggled. Seriously, after the game (against Geneva) last night, my roommate left, I really did and prayed, ”Pogoy said.
“I will leave everything to Lord because in the last two games my leftovers were free but I couldn’t shoot so I really prayed.”
Pogoy’s prayer was answered as he regained his shooting form to explode for 27 points on a 12-for-24 shot from the field and had the Tropang Giga out-run the Bolts.
While he missed all four of his three-point attempts, the standout Gilas Pilipinas made up for it with solid layouts and smooth jump shots.
“It really is a low night (in the last two games). So what I did was not just rely on my 3-point shots. I did a pure drive and high-percentage shots. ”
It was a huge recovery effort not only for the former FEU star but also for the entire TNT team.
Tropang Giga, heading to the playoffs, stopped a two-game knockdown and solidified his two-time bid to win with a 7-3 scoreline.
“It just came to our notice then. The difficulty of going to the playoffs will beat you. Even though we got off to a good start, it’s more important that we win the playoffs,” Pogoy said.
