CEBU CITY, Philippines – More police officers and 160 bags of rice will be deployed at Sitio Zapatera in Barangay Luz, Cebu City, as the closure of the area continues.
Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella, at a press conference on Monday, April 13, 2020, said that the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) agreed to send more police in the sub-village to ensure that the closure is applied there.
Labella also said that the city government will provide 160 bags of rice to some of the site’s residents who have been ordered to stay indoors since April 7, 2020.
“The city government decided to provide 160 shelves of rice so they don’t have to go out, and we will add something else for their meals due to the closure, “he said.
“There will be more police in the area so there is no violation of the area,” he added.
There are around 9,000 people, or 800 families, residing in Sitio Zapatera, a densely populated poor urban area in Barangay Luz.
It has been blocked since April 7, 2020, after one of them tested positive for coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19), and the first for Barangay Luz.
But on April 11, 2020, Barangay officials stepped up their efforts to implement the blockade after two more people were discovered to be infected with the virus.
The two new COVID-19 patients in the area had close contacts of the previously confirmed case. It was the result of a contact search conducted by the Cebu City Health Department, Labella said.
The mayor also said that contact tracing is still ongoing in other parts of the city which, as of April 11, 2020, has a total of 25 confirmed cases of COVID-19. / bmjo
